Indian Bike Sales Figure May 2011


Hero Honda: Hero Honda the world’s no. 1 two wheeler company has posted growth of 14.75% in the month of May 2011 compared to May 2010.  The company has sold 5,00,234 units of two wheeler in the month of May 2011 compared to 4,35,933 units of two wheeler sold in the month of May 2010. This is the thirteenth consecutive month where Hero Honda has sold more than 4 lakh units and the firth time and consecutive three times more than 5 lakh plus sale in the history of company. However on the month on month basis the sales declined by 3.26%. The company sold 5,17,099 units in the month of April 2011.  Hero Honda Pleasure is continuously crossing 35,000 units a month mark. The company has reported sales of 10,17,333 units for the period of April-May 2011 up by 25.97% compared to 8,07,585 units during the same period last year.
“We have crossed one million sales mark in the very first two months of this fiscal. Setting new industry benchmarks with consecutive months of over five lakh sales, we have put ourselves well on course towards our guidance of over six million unit sales in this fiscal year (FY”12),” HHML Senior Vice-President Anil Dua said. “The company has scaled up capacity at its existing three plants to 6.15 million units and now with the forecast of a good monsoon, we expect the market demand also to sustain itself” he added.
The company is running at its optimum capacity to satisfied demand. As expected the company’s has started selling 5 lakh plus units every month and it seems that the trend will continue.

Bajaj Auto

Country’s second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto has reported growth of 18.00 % in the month of May 2011. The company has sold 3,17,989 units of motorcycle in the month of May 2011 compared to 2,69,488 units in the month of May 2010. This is by far company’s highest ever monthly sales for May month. The company exported 1,26,818 units in the month of May 2011 up by 32.15% compared to 95,964 units in the month of May 2010
On the month on month basis sales is down by 1.32%. The company sold 3,22,235 units in the month of April 2011. The company’s total sales stood at 3,58,849 units in the month of May 2011 up by 19.84% compared to 2,99,442 units in the month of May 2010. Pulsar and Discover combined sales stood at 68% of overall motorcycle sales of May 2011. The company sold 75,000 Pulsar and 1,39,000 Discover. The company exported 2,000 units of Avenger and 1,500 Duke to Europe. The company has sold 6,40,224 units of two wheeler during April to May 2011 period up by 17.35% compared to5,45,583 units sold during the same period last year.
The company is aiming to sale 4.6 million units in this financial year with 4.1 million units of motorcycle.  The company is aiming to sale over a million units of Pulsars and 1.7 million units of Discover in the financial year 2011-12. The company will also re-launch Boxer which will contribute close to 300,000 units for the financial year 2011-12.

TVS Motors

TVS Motors has posted growth of 17.60% in the month of May 2011. The company has sold 1,81,891units in the month of May 2011 compared to 1,54,667 units sold in the month of May 2010. Total sales stood at 1,85,930 units in the month of May 2011 up by 18.44% compared to 1,56,980 units sold in the same period last year.  On the month on basis the company has reported sales growth of 10.79%. The company has sold 1,64,183 units of two wheeler in the month of April 2011.
Domestic sales stood at 1,58,829  units in the month of May 2011 up by  16.26% compared to 1,36,621 units sold in the month of May 2010. Export stood at 26,168 units in the month of May 2011 up by 41.59% compared to 18,482 units sold in May 2010. The company sold 38,168 units of scooter in the month of May 2011 up by 19.71% compared to 31,884 units of scooter sold in the month of May 2010.  Motorcycle sales stood at 75,619 units in the month of May 2011 up by 11.36% compared to 67,906 units sold in the month of May 2010. Moped sales stood at 68,104 units in the month of May 2011. The company has sold 3,46,074 units during April 2011 to May 2011 period up by 15.61% compared to2,99,356 units in the same period last year.
TVS Motors has reported better number compared to previous month. The company is pushing well on moped front. The company is also bullish on export front and exploring new opportunities to expand its export market. The company has set goal of selling 2.4 million units in this financial year.

HMSI

India’s largest scooter manufacturing company Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Ltd reported sales growth of 5.72% in the month of May 2011. The company reported sales of 1,45,723 units in the month of May 2011 compared to 1,37,842 units in the May 2010. On month on month basis the company’s sales is up by 8.13%. The company sold 1,36,623 units in the month of April 2011.
Motorcycle sale is up by 15.74% in the month of May 2011. The company sold 69,488 units in the month of May 2011 compared to 60,040 units in the month of May 2010. On the other hand Scooter sale is down by 2.01%. The company sold 76,241 units of scooter in the month of May 2011 compared to 77,802 units in the month of May 2010. The company has sold 2,82,352 units during the April 2011 to May 2011 period up by 2.78% compared to 2,74,704 units sold in the same period last year.
HMSI is growing at very fast rate but the sales are constrained by capacity. As the company’s second plant in Rajasthan has inaugurated its second plant on June 2, 2011, sales is going to pick from next month. Beside this company is planning to expand it’s capacity to 4 million units by mid 2013.

Yamaha India

Yamaha India has reported sales growth of 55.04% in the month of May 2011 compared to May 2010. Total sales stood at 38,812 units in the month of May 2011 compared to 25,033 units last year in the same period. The company reported month on month basis sales is grown by 12.58%. The company sold 34,476 units in the April 2011. Domestic sales stood at 27,959 units in the month of May 2010 up by 58.73% compared to 17,614 units in the month of May 2010. Export stood at 10,853 units in the month of May 2011 up by 46.29% compared to 7,419 units in the month of May 2010. During April to May 2011 the company sold 73,288 units up by 46.57% compared to 50,001 units sold in the same period last year.
Commenting on the sales performance, India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd CEO and Managing Director, Mr Hiroyuki Suzuki said “This is the direct result of efforts to connect with our target customers through various marketing initiatives Our recently launched FZ series has got a great response and it’s helping us equally in boosting our sales in their respective segments. We are seeing good sales growth this year and expect the momentum to continue for the rest of the year.”
The company is aiming to sell 5,00,000 units in this financial year with 3,50,000 units of domestic sales and 1,50,000 units of export. The company is also planning to launch scooter in this year.

Suzuki Motorcycle

Suzuki Motorcycle India reported massive growth of 39.11% in the month of May 2011 compared to May 2010. The company’s total sales stood at 30,222 units in the month of May 2011 compared to 21,725 units in the month of May 2010. The company has reported growth of 2.90 % month on month which means the company is expanding its capacity. The company sold 29,369 units in the month of April 2011. During the April 2011 to May 2011 the company sold 59,591 units up by 40.27% compared to 42,483 units in the month of May 2011.
Commenting on the May sales performance, SMIPL Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Atul Gupta said: “We have received very good response from the market to all our products. The growing customer satisfaction among present owners of Suzuki products has led to a positive word-of-mouth in the market”.
The company attributed its growth to the good response to its GS150R motorcycle and Access125 scooter, besides the recently launched SlingShot bike.

Mahindra Two Wheelers

Two wheeler company Mahindra two wheeler reported impressive growth of 36.34% in the month of May 2011 compared to May 2010 after sluggish sale in the month of April 2011. Total sales stood at10,790 units in the month of May 2011 compared to 8,046 units in the month of May 2010. The scooter sales stood at 10,790 units in the month May 2011 up by 36.34% compared to 8,046 units in the month of May 2010.  As the production of Mahindra Sattalio halted the company has not reported any sales for Mahindra Sattalio. The company is going to re-launch Sattalio within few months. Month on Month basis the company’s sales is up by 12.93%. The company sold 10790 units last month. During The April to May 2011 period the company reported sales of 20,525 units up by 20.35% compared to sales of 17,055 units in the same month last year. The cumulative sales for the company have crossed a landmark figure of two and a half lakh units, while the Rodeo has crossed a figure of 1,00,000 units.
As said earlier the company will not be able to report any higher growth rate in upcoming month as the demand for scooter is slowing down compared to previous month. Moreover market leader HMSI is going to set up second plant which will reduce waiting period for Activa. It will affect Mahindra two wheeler the most as the company mostly gain sales due unavailability of Activa. Upcoming months will be very challenging for Mahindra two wheelers.

Summary

The Indian two wheeler industry’s growth rate remains intact particularly the May has shown strong growth in spite of so many negative factors like fuel price hike, increase in prices of two wheelers etc. The May 2011 month has seen sales of more than 1.23 million units up by 16.43% compared to 1.05 million units sold in May 2010. The period April 2011 to May 2011 has witnessed growth of 19.77% over the same period last year. More than 2.44 million units of two wheelers sold during the period of April 2011 to May 2011 compared to 2.04 million units in the same period last year.
Hero Honda the market leader is continuously posting double digit growth with robust sales of 5 lakh units each month. It has done 1.02 million units sales in the current financial year. Bajaj Auto the second largest manufacturer of two wheelers has sold 0.64 million units in the current financial year.
TVS Motors has sold more than 0.35 million units whereas HMSI sales stood at 0.28 million units during April 2011 to May 2011 period. Yamaha India, Suzuki Motorcycle and Mahindra two wheelers sold 0.07 million, 0.06 million and 0.02 million units respectively during the period of April 2011 to May 2010. Going ahead we will continuously have double digit growth in two wheeler industry despite fuel price hike and rising price of two wheelers as there are several new product launches in pipeline for next 6 month. But the growth rate will come down in upcoming months.
